Order Critical Thinking Essay
There are several reasons why critical thinking skills is important in this 21st century is important. First, is to evaluate knowledge. Second, is communication. Finally, is to solve problems using logic, resourcefulness and imagination. The concept of critical thinking applies to all sorts of knowledge and implies the true engagement of learners in the process of knowledge construction through reflecting and thinking deeply. Evaluate knowledge is important in critical thinking. Teachers should go beyond “what” and ask “how” and “why” when it comes to certain questions. For instance, in a criminal justice course, professors might want to ask, “why is capital punishment important?”. Another question that can be asked is “how does the death penalty affect us?”. Certain questions that are asked “why” or “how” should be asked for students can really think about the subject. Another is using proper language. For example, instead of using “slang” such as “tea” which means gossip when texting, actually use correct vocabulary. Next, is comprehension. Understanding, comparing and problem solving is important. Instead of using the internet to look up answers on google, actually try to solve it on your own. For instance, in my CRJU 302 course, I was struggling with some of the theories, so I decided to read the chapter a few times, instead of googling the question. Understanding, Inferring or drawing a conclusion based on the information they read, heard, or seen is important when it comes to comprehension in critical thinking. Also restating, rearranging, and summarizing the material is important when it comes to critical thinking. Using the internet has damaged comprehension in a way because it gives students the easy way to find answers by googling them instead of taking the time to think about the question or subject. Pigliucii (2011) noted that “we live an era where knowledge is available through computers, electronic tablets and book readers”.
Communication is important in critical thinking skills. It incorporates different levels of interaction and sharing information. Students use technology to communicate such as applications like Instagram, Snap Chat and Facebook. For example, I use Instagram and Snap chat to communicate with family members and friends. In a way technology has damaged communication among others because people currently use apps instead of communicating in person. Talking to others when it comes to passing on knowledge is also important. For example, when I first started my first job at Super Mex one of my coworkers and manager were training me on what to do. Passing on knowledge, when teaching students in school is also important in communication. Encouraging students and others to enhance in their communication will assist them both in their personal and professional life.
Next, solving problems using logic, resourcefulness and imagination. Students in this 21st century need the strengths and skills to solve complicated problems in real time. As society advances, so will the complications of problems. Students should get together when solving problems will help them get better results. When it comes to imagination, students should be able to deliberate, create talent and be able to come up with solutions. For example, my little niece Ava, showed great imagination from a very early age, when it came to projects like painting in her daily activity class at Harbor Regional. Teachers should be giving students projects and tasks to challenge them, so that they can think out the box. I remember in middle school in my history class, Mr. Hernandez gave us a project on Egyptian pyramids, where we had to make a pyramid and discuss information about that age. Their creativity will display who they are, what they think and accomplish.
