PROFESSOR INSTRUCTIONS:
In this writing assignment, you command what is going to be discussed by revising your first draft into a final product.
To rehash, you must locate a website for your first topic and an article from a peer-reviewed journal for your second topic that closely relates to two different current or previous readings, assignments, or any other course materials from Weeks 1-3, Chapters 1-9). It is the perfect opportunity to investigate two dissimilar policing topics that piqued your interest and now wish to share with your classmates (examples: briefing a legal case or explaining a legal concept with sociological or criminological significance, examining a theory as it pertains to the police culture, etc.).
So, why is this exercise important? Well, think of it from a standpoint beyond the course. Were you able to find a topic that you had little or no knowledge beforehand, but now, fully grasp after doing this exercise, causing you to feel a deeper appreciation for sociology? After gaining a small glimpse into the types of searches expected of you in this and other advanced/graduate-level courses, this exercise will equip you with the tools needed to write our next and last significant writing assignment: the reaction paper.
ë Reflection/Conclusion: As part of (or prior to) your conclusion, precisely explain what new item(s) you have learned by doing this particular exercise (do not leave this out). Take a few minutes to reflect on something that you did not know beforehand. Other ideas to think about: Do you see this exercise being applicable in the “real world” today? If so, how can you personally or professionally use it? All of this should be mentioned prior to or as part of your initial’s conclusion. As a side note, revisit this DQ towards the end of the course to compare/contrast your differing viewpoints and to add substance to your “final thoughts” section of Week 16’s DQ (discussed later as the ending of the course draws near).
ë Original Initial’s Number of Sources: Your original initial’s “References” (if using APA/ASA in-text citations) or “Works Cited” (if using MLA in-text citations) section must contain — at the very minimum — 3 sources (the course’s textbook, URL of the website used for first topic, and peer-reviewed/research article for second topic).
ë Peer Reply’s Number of Sources: Peer replies don’t require sources; however, now is a good time to use the course’s textbook (or, even sources you have previously used) to connect/back up your essay to peer’s initial.
ë Grading: Please note that a lower grade will be given to essays (a) without DIRECT references/explanations of how and why the sources found are relevant to this course, (b) without a brief summary, (c) without two unrelated topics with their respective URL, (d) without topics not within specified weeks, and (e) without or improper references/works cited section and in-text citations (i.e., sources are incorrectly formatted within references section, incorrectly cited within the text, or if the course’s textbook is not cited in both topic discussions).
