ANSWERS
PARTS
DESCRIPTIONS/FUNCTIONS
1.Stage
a. Controls the power to the microscope.
2. On/Off Switch
b. Also known as the revolving nose-piece or turret, this structure holds the objective lenses. Rotating it allows the objective lens to be switched.
3. Objective Lenses
c. The smaller of two adjustment knobs moves the objective lens closer to, or farther from, the specimen in very small steps.
4. Nose Piece
d. This area is the main, flat plate that holds the slides for observation.
5. Fine Focus
e. The larger of two adjustment knobs that moves the objective lens closer to, or farther from, the specimen in larger steps.
6. Eyepiece
f. Refers to the main section of the microscope minus the base or any illumination. Generally include the eyepiece and objective lenses but not the focusing block.
7. Diaphragm
g. The lens nearest the object being viewed. These lenses can come in a range of powers such as 4X (scanning), 10X (low power), 40X (high power) or 100X (immersion objective).
8. Course Focus
h. The lens you look through, to present the image of the specimen. This lens is typically 10X.
9. Body
i. Most useful at high powers. Typically a five hole disc housed under the stage to adjust the amount of light passing through the stage opening.

Part 3—Immersion Oil Lens
1. Most lenses are used “dry” or without _____________.
2. Some lenses use a special kind of oil to increase their ___________________.
3. Define resolution.
4. Oil is typically used with which lens?
5. True/False—Once oil is added, the objective lens should not be switched back to a non-oil lens.

Part 4—Microscope Care
1. Briefly explain how you should carry the microscope.
2. Briefly explain how you should clean the lens.
3. True/False—When you are finished with the microscope, you should rotate the nosepiece back to the highest power setting.
4. True/False—Always make sure the power cord is neatly wrapped up and replace the dust cover before returning the microscope to the cabinet.
