You may wish to download this assignment for reference as you write the paper.
For this assignment, you will need to locate an article that is printed in a newspaper, magazine, or in a resource, such as WebMD. The article must be on some health related subject. It cannot be from a medical journal.
Please examine the attachment of a sample article (including the highlighting/underlining) which you will find in Announcements
In the critique, you will need to:
Identify the author, the source, and the date published.
You will need to download the article. You may save the article as a Word doc. docx or PDF, as long as you know how to highlight words on the article.
Highlight the medical terms in the article. Do not define them. Don’t worry if there are not a lot of medical terms. This assignment is really meant to give you an exercise in identifying what the medical terms are and to see what the author(s) believe are important to let the reader know.
Summarize the article. Do not exceed 200 words.
In a separate paragraph, critique the article by identifying whether or not you believe the article is credible (meaning from a reliable source), accurate (to the best of your knowledge) and something that would be understandable to the audience for which it is intended. (Please do not exceed 200 words on this part).

Credibility: Look at the magazine or newspaper source. Is it usually responsible in its reporting or does it have a reputation for being a paper/magazine that doesn’t use reliable sources?
Accuracy: Does the information appear accurate according to what you understand about the condition? Or, if you have very little knowledge about the condition, do they cite reputable sources (MDs, research centers, etc.)?
Understandability: Can you understand the article? Do you think a member of your family would understand it as written?

Summary:
This article which was obtained from the East Bay Times newspaper which described a new procedure for treating a type of blindness that is carried on a gene. The Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health Science University in Portland OR, recently performed the first ever in-vivo CRISPR gene-editing procedure for treating a condition known as “Leber congenital amaurosis” which is caused by a gene mutation that keeps the body from making a protein needed to convert light into signals to the brain which enables sight. This particular condition can’t be treated with standard gene therapy because the one needed is too big to fit inside the disabled viruses normally used to transmit it into cells. So the doctors edited the mutation by making two cuts on either side of the DNA. They hope that the ends of the DNA will reconnect and allow the gene to work as it should. The eye surgery itself has little risk. The outcome of the surgery will probably not be known for at least a month.
Critique:
Credibility: The article was published in the East Bay Times which is a widely circulated newspaper in the East Bay Area. The person who wrote the article was a reporter for the Associated Press. Although these two sources are not always accurate in their reporting, they are generally thought of as being credible, and if there is something printed that is not correct, they will print a retraction along with the correct information.
Accuracy: Several physicians from reputable institutions in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, specializing in conditions of the eye were referenced about the procedures involved in gene editing in this article. They supported the theory and practice associated with CRISPR techniques (CRISPR is a genetic engineering tool that uses a sequence of DNA and its associated protein to edit the base pairs of a gene). The content of the article seems very accurate.
Understandability: The article has been simplified to accommodate the reading level of most lay people, although there are parts of it that many would have to “Google” to get a more clear understanding (such as Leber congenital amaurosis). I understood it, because of my health background, but some members of my family would have a difficult time with it.
